About What Plane?

What Plane? is an independent aircraft-identification app created by David Wilkinson. It is designed around one job: telling you which aircraft is nearest to you, quickly enough to look up and see it.

First-hand product expertise

David designs and develops the app and its aircraft-data service. Product articles are therefore based on direct knowledge of how What Plane? calculates distance, resolves aircraft types and airlines, and presents live ADS-B data. The app uses data from the community receiver network provided by ADSB.lol.

Editorial policy

Guides should answer a real aviation or aircraft-identification question clearly. Factual claims should be checked against primary or authoritative sources where practical, such as aviation authorities, aircraft manufacturers, airports, meteorological agencies and original technical documentation. Sources are linked in the relevant article so readers can verify them.

Articles are updated when facts, regulations, product features or available evidence materially change. Page dates are not changed simply to make old material appear new.
